The farmers of our country
October 27th, 2009
Does the word “farmer” automatically conjure up a picture of a dhoti clad man working on the earth? Two interesting articles here that make us think twice.
First, an account of how women are heading farms in North India, as husbands migrate elsewhere for work, and on the impact of climate change on their livelihoods.
The second is the story of Hema Ananth, winner of the Karnataka state level Dr. M.H. Mari Gowda Best Horticultural Farmer Award.
Happy Reading!

Apu, kindly correct the 2nd link. An unnecessary http:// has disabled the link.
Hey Pravin, thanks so much. Corrected.
Thanks for information.
There is another category of farmers. The politician. They are mostly into farming for taxation purpose, for land grabbing, for “parking” their black funds.
Chowla-ji, that was funny! (but sadly true…)

Funnily enough, I was just reading an article the other day which stated that contrary to popular belief, the majority of the world’s farmers are women.
I loved this post. I read another beautiful post about how farming was started by pre-historic-women when men went hunting! I agree, I also mentioned this in my post about when did women start working - women have been out in the fields working throughout history and still are. Let me read the link!
Anji - in terms of farm workers, yes, I think a lot of them would be women. In India, perhaps ownership is still rarer…
IHM - Thanks. Yes, I’ve also read that women as farmer theory…
